Around fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations show the substance was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior representative said the vandalism made him without words and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
